Sports Update

Cricket

The 1st year B girls played Mount Anville in their league final on Tuesday. Mount Anville were up first to bat and made 45 runs in their innings. Wesley responded strongly, chasing them and ensuring the win with 54 runs overall. Congratulations to all the girls who came out Leinster League champions. A great start to their cricket career in Wesley.

Commiserations to the U14 B boys who lost their final on Wednesday. They played an incredibly strong Ardgillan side who proved too good to beat. On their journey to the final the team was ably led by Hugh Grant, with good bowling from Kafu Momoh, Oisin Spain and good batting from Chris Bailey, Hugh Grant and Gavin Herlihy. Well done to all the team for their successful season.

The Junior boys played CUS on Thursday in the final of the Leinster Junior Cup. Wesley batted first and got off to a great start with a first wicket partnership of 60 between Tim Elliott (36) and Craig Mackay (37). The innings ended then with another great partnership between top scorer Max Collins (52*) and Tom Power to get us up to a total of 171-6. CUS batted very well and at 123-3 looked to be in control of the game until a triple wicket maiden from Scott Ruttle (4-36) turned the game around. Tight bowling by Jack Atkinson and Craig Mackay and great fielding from the team finished out the game for Wesley who won by 10 runs and thus claimed the Leinster Junior Cup. This is the first time Wesley have won the cup since 1963 and the captain that day, Mike Halliday, was in attendance to see captain Scott Ruttle hoist the trophy.  A huge achievement for all the boys and the school. Well done.

These matches bring the cricket season to a close for another year. Well done to all of the students who took part this year and represented the College and a special mention to those who played for the first time. Thank you to Mr Harte and Mr Blennerhasset and the coaching team for their hard work and dedication.

Tennis

The Senior boys played Colaiste Eoin in an incredibly tight final. Wesley won the first and second singles. Colaiste Eoin won both doubles, it all came down to the third singles. The match was very tight, with the boys playing over two and a half hours with the sun at its hottest. It went to a tie breaker in the third set with everyone on edge. Both sides had match points but it was Colaiste Eoin who converted theirs and took the win. Take a look at the boys in action here. Congratulations to the boys for their hugely successful season.

This ties up the end of the tennis season, a big thank you to all those who represented the college and also to those who took part in the sessions in school and the in house championship. Thank you to Ms Moffett and Ms O'Brien and all the staff involved for all their hard work and dedication.
