Artificial Intelligence
As the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools becomes increasingly common in education, we want Wesley College to be a place that uses these technologies responsibly and in line with best academic practice. We as a staff are actively engaging with these tools to see how they can contribute to the learning experience. While AI can offer real learning benefits, it can also undermine understanding and skill development if used inappropriately.
To provide clarity, we have introduced the Wesley College AI Guidelines. These outline four levels of permitted AI use, ranging from tasks where no AI is allowed to tasks where some structured planning, research, or editing support may be appropriate. For each assignment in class, teachers will specify the level of permitted AI use, and students must follow the stated guidelines and reference any AI assistance used.
| Level | AI Use | What It Means | Student Responsibility |
| 1 | No AI. | You must complete the task entirely on your own without any help from AI tools for planning, research or writing etc. |
Complete the work on your own. No AI help at any stage. |
| 2 | AI for Planning and Research. |
You may use AI to brainstorm ideas, find information or explain a concept but not write your work. |
Only use AI to plan. You must write the actual piece yourself. Check all information and facts and ensure to write in your own words. Reference all use of AI. |
| 3 | AI for Editing. | You write the initial draft, and may then use AI to help improve grammar, spelling or structure. |
You must review and understand the suggestions made. Reference all use of AI. |
| 4 | Full AI | You may use AI throughout the task e.g. for planning, research, editing or writing. |
You must review and understand any AI generated content in your work. Reference all use of AI. |
All Leaving Certificate coursework must follow the rules and requirements set out by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). Where the SEC restricts or prohibits AI use, those rules apply in full. Teachers will provide clear guidance for each coursework component, and any breach of SEC guidelines will be treated as a serious academic integrity issue. The guidelines can be found here: State Examinations Commission Coursework Rules & Procedures
All year groups have received a talk on AI, during which the guidelines were explained and the limitations of AI tools were discussed. While students are encouraged to use caution and good judgement, we also recognise that AI can support study and revision when used properly.
Students may use Microsoft’s Copilot 13+ chat for revision and self‑directed learning. Positive and appropriate uses include:
- generating flashcards based on class notes or textbooks
- creating quizzes and matching exercises for self‑testing
- breaking down complex topics into clear, manageable summary points
- helping students review material in different formats to reinforce understanding
- offering explanations or clarifications to support independent study
We appreciate the support of parents and guardians in encouraging students to follow the attached guidelines and in helping them develop habits of integrity, critical thinking, and digital literacy that will serve them well throughout their education.
If you have any questions about AI use or the guidelines, please contact the school.
