The Wesley College Debating Society
The Wesley College Debating Society meets twice a week in the GB Shaw Auditorium to debate topical issues. The society is open to all students from Preps to Sixth Form and all of its members are free to put themselves forward for external competitions or to simply enjoy the weekly meetings.
Wesley College has enjoyed many successes in Debating over the years. The school has sent teams to the prestigious Oxford Schools Debating Competition, secured places in finals of the Leinster Schools Debating Competition and the Junior Matheson Debating Competition, to name but a few. The college has also hosted large competitions which has afforded many students the opportunity to be directly involved in adjudication, conducting workshops for younger participants and also preparing motions.
The Wesley College Debating Society exposes its members to new ideas and concepts. It helps students to see the power of deploying rational reasoned arguments and compelling evidence. It also gives students a chance to sharpen their analytical thinking and to develop their public speaking. Most importantly, however, the society is there to instil confidence in its members and to promote fun and learning outside of the classroom.
