German Debating
German debating has been a national competition organised by the Goethe Institut. In the past five years, this competition has not taken place but Wesley College has organised several debates against local German school St. Kilian's Deutsche Schule.
Some of the topics debated have included banning social media for under sixteens, getting rid of animal testing and the importance of learning languages in school.
This is a fantastic opportunity for senior students to improve their oral language skills as well as learning to really think on their feet. It is challenging at times but it is a wonderfully rewarding experience.
Students prepare a 4 minute speech and are asked to refute the arguments of the other team as the debate progresses. There is also a team captain, who delivers the opening and closing speeches for the team.
Some past pupils, who have gone on to study German at third level, have participated at the annual UCD V Trinity Colour's debate.
