Hockey Training returned with great gusto in Wesley College on Monday the 7th of September. Day one started with girls training and saw Prep and 1st Years combined, Minors and Juniors all turning out in great numbers. The Prep and 1st Year girls Head Coach this year is Natalie Fulton with Mrs. Henderson as teacher in charge. We had 60 girls out between Prep and 1st Year and a fantastic number of girls so far 8 in total who have decided to try out goalkeeping and are really enjoying their sessions with the 4 great goalkeeper coaches we are lucky to have here in Wesley all past pupils and past goalkeepers for the school.
The Minor girls this year have Daragh Walsh a past pupil and current Irish Senior International player as their Head Coach with Miss O’Donnell as their teacher in charge. Miss O’Donnell is new to Wesley this year however she has already become a very familiar face at hockey and with the Minor girls in a short time. This group currently have no goalkeepers training however we are hopeful that before too long some of the girls will commit to training and playing in goals as it is vital that they can fill these positions when fixtures restart.
Jason Klinkradt this year has taken on the role of Junior girls’ head coach with Miss Love as the teacher in charge. There have been huge numbers turning out at this age group. Currently there are 80 girls playing in this group including 7 goalkeepers all keeping each other on their toes in training and delivering quality training sessions weekly.
Senior girls also have great numbers with over 70 girls coming out regularly to training. Mr. Blennerhassett is head coach again this year for the group with Miss Moffett as their teacher in charge. This is great numbers for our senior girls and can only bode well for competitive training going forwards.
We have a huge team of 37 enthusiastic and reliable coaches who all make it possible for us have to have so many students out being coached every day Monday to Saturday. Despite the challenges we currently have with restrictions on contact and games each and every one of the coaches is making sure to come up with varied and imaginative ways to give effective coaching whilst also having fun at the same time. We are delighted to have 6 of last years’ 6th years return as coaches. They are Holly Micklem, Charlotte Stapleton, Alex Dunlop, Hannah McGrane, Emma Paul and Fionn Marriott.
On the boys’ side we have had huge interest from this years’ Prep and 1st Year group with great attendance at training sessions. There are 65 boys currently at U13 including 4 very committed goalkeepers. Natalie Fulton and Ben O’Grady are heading up the coaching with Mrs. Henderson teacher in charge.
At U14s Mr. Delaney has been keeping these boys on their toes. The season started with the annual handing over of the past trophies won by the old captains.
Although the group is not huge with 25 to 30 regularly attending the boys are committed and rumor has it Mr. Delaney has challenged them to play in a Ryder Cup competition up in Stepaside on Wednesday next. We look forward to hearing those results in our next update.
Mr. Harte is head coach for the Junior boys again this year with 55 to 60 boys attending training regularly, and worth noting this group were particularly diligent in attending the S & C sessions offered during the Summer holidays.
The Senior boys have Jason Klinkradt as their head coach with Mrs. Henderson as teacher in charge. There are 30 boys coming out regularly to these training sessions who continue to push each other with their competitive mind set and great work ethic.

Last but certainly not least all of us in the Hockey group would like to say a massive thank you and best of luck to our superstar head goalkeeping coach Leo Micklem. Leo is heading tomorrow to Southampton to take up a 3 year research degree. Leo you will be sorely missed however you have trained up 3 very accomplished goalkeeping coaches in Euan, Eva and your little sister Holly. You know you are always welcome back to Wesley and we and all the goalkeepers you have given such great coaching nd enthusiasm to over the years wish you every ounce of luck in Southampton.
