German Debating Competition

German Debating Competition

Wesley College took part in the national German debating competition on Zoom on Thursday December 2nd.

The students who took part were Keeva Byrne (captain, 6th Year), Robyn Burke-Mellon (2nd speaker, 5th Year), Ella Byrne (3rd speaker, 6th Year) und Luke Barnard (4th Year). Lucy Ellis (6th Year) took on the role of chairperson and was a sub and Shalom Daniel-Ochonma (6th Year) also acted as a sub. Finn Davenport (5th Year) helped the team to prepare for the debate.

The topic for the debate against Coláiste Íosagáin was:

„Smartphones sollten an Schulen in Irland erlaubt sein.“ (We should allow smartphones in all lessons in Ireland)

All the students spoke for four minutes on the topic of the use of smartphones in lessons. All our speakers needed to include react spontaneously to the other speakers in German. Although we were defeated by a strong and experienced team, all the students spoke very well and we are very proud of their achievement. It was a wonderful and enriching experience.
